Even with a high offer and a generous bonus package, your candidate may want more.

If you have truly made your best offer—as I recommend—explain that you are already above market rate, and you can go no higher. Be honest about it. But then, be prepared to let the candidate go. The truth is, when you follow these nine steps, and you have brought up salary expectations throughout the entire three to five week hiring process, that will almost never happen. By then, you have found a candidate who has the three characteristics of success, who finds value in other things than money, and who fits your company culture and wants to work for you.
