Patrick Lencioni who wrote The Advantage and The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team knows the best teams perform the best. From business teams to sports team to military teams. He says the #1 foundation to building a good team is trust. He calls it vulnerability based trust. This is when team members are completely comfortable with being transparent and honest. Members don’t pretend. And they genuinely mean things like “I screwed up”, “I need help”, “your idea is better than mine”, “I’m sorry”. He says the only way for teams to build real trust is for the team members to come clean about who they are, warts and all. Then once trust is built, you can have healthy conflict, and you can get commitment which breeds accountability and results.
So, how do you build trust within teams?
