Is Your Top Candidate Coachable?

Is Your Top Candidate Coachable

By David Wolfe

As a college baseball coach, I saw that freshman often have a hard time making adjustments to college-level pitching and hitting. They think that what worked for them in high school will work for them in college, which isn’t true. The same is true in any profession.

Everyone needs to be coachable and moldable if they want to get better.

You only want to hire coachable people that want to learn and grow.

If you aren’t 100 percent sold that this candidate is coachable, here are some questions that you can ask to give you more insight.

  • “Describe to me your best teacher or coach and tell me how they helped.” Do they admit they sought and received help? Or is all their success due to their own efforts?
  • “Tell me about an important accomplishment in your.” Do they only use the word “I” or do they use “we” also? If they only use “I,” this could be an indicator the person is uncoachable and not humble.
  • “How have you most changed over the past five years?” Have they changed, and can they admit their weaknesses? Or do they claim to have always had it all together?
  • “What is one area of your life that you are working to improve currently?” Does the person even think they need to work on anything?
