If you aren’t 100 percent sold that your top candidate is driven, here are some questions that you can ask to give you more insight.
- “What’s the one thing in your life you put the most effort into achieving?” You are checking to see if they have ever really applied
- “Give me an example of something you succeeded.” You are looking for a history of success in anything; if they have really put themselves out there and tried something and had some success, that shows the type of drive a person has. On my team I have a former NCAA gymnast, a professional baseball player from the Arizona Diamondbacks, and an Army Ranger with multiple Purple Hearts. It doesn’t have to be a work-related success, as you can see, just something that shows they have the drive to put their mind to the task at hand.
- “What do you enjoy doing outside of work?” If someone has a huge list of all the things they love to do, then there is a chance that you and your new position will never compete with all their activities and interests.
- “What is your greatest accomplishment in life?” Check to see how hard it was to achieve and what adversity they had to face.
